The Royal Hotel might sound like the next Wolf Creek when you first read the premise.
The Aussie outback thriller, which was directed by Kitty Green (The Assistant) and stars Julia Garner, Hugo Weaving and Toby Wallace, follows two American backpackers (Garner and Jessica Henwick) who take a bartending job at a remote WA pub after they run out of money in Sydney. "You're gonna have to be OK with a little male attention," advises the woman at the job agency — a foreboding sentence that flies right over the head of the 20-something travellers.
Hanna and Liv plan to work at the pub for a couple of weeks, save up some money, and return to drinking vodka and sodas and snogging sweaty, beery-breathed boys on floating nightclubs on Sydney harbour (that in itself seems like a horror movie to anyone over the age of 30) as quickly as they possibly can.
