Ten minutes into Netflix’s new apocalyptic thriller Leave The World Behind, an oil tanker grounds itself on a Long Island beach.
Directed by Sam Esmail and based on the 2020 bestselling novel by American author Rumaan Alam, Leave The World Behind follows Brooklyn couple Clay and Amanda Sandford (Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts), who make a last-minute booking at an AirBnB on Long Island, so they can take their kids Rosie (Farrah McKenzie) and Archie (Charlie Evans) on a much-needed holiday.
The Sandford family are enjoying a day on the beach, when Rosie notices an oil tanker rapidly approaching the shoreline. The family think it’s odd, but soon go back to sunbathing and reading their books. Afterall, oil tankers don’t just ground themselves on suburban beaches. Right?
