Over the past five years, a new kind of TV show has emerged — the comedy/drama based on a comedian/writer’s own life that deals with some sort of past trauma.
Michaela Coel did it with I May Destroy You, Mae Martin did it with Feel Good, and now Scottish comedian Richard Gadd has done it with the new Netflix series, Baby Reindeer.
The 7-part series stars Gadd as ‘Donny’, a fledging comedian who finds himself the latest target of serial stalker Martha, after he gives her a cup of tea on the house while working behind the bar at a local pub.
Over the course of the next six months, Martha turns up at Donny’s workplace, sits outside his house, leaves hundreds of comments on his Facebook page and sends him thousands of messages, before physically attacking his date.
After he finally reports her to the police, Donny must come to terms with a traumatic incident from his past which he believes made him a ‘magnet’ for someone like Martha.
