Hello!

American Fiction should win the Oscar for Best Picture and you can watch it at home this weekend on Prime Video.

Adapted by Cord Jefferson from Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, this biting satire about the publishing industry follows Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), an author and professor, who is exhausted by the modern culture wars.

After his agent tells him yet another publisher has rejected his latest manuscript because “they want a Black book” — Monk writes a parody of the kind of books written by Black authors the white publishing industry are falling over themselves to publish, under the pen name ‘Stagg R Leigh’.

The manuscript, of course, is picked up immediately, and Monk finds himself finally embraced by the industry he has been trying to crack for decades.

While Monk is trying to keep up his double life as Stagg R Leigh, he’s also looking after his ageing mother, and attempting to start a new relationship, while hiding who he really is.
