#68 What I've been watching, reading and listening to this week.
A beautiful new documentary and a compelling Australian true crime podcast.
I watched the most beautiful documentary on Netflix last night and I woke up thinking about it.
It’s called Will & Harper and it follows Will Ferrell and his best friend Harper Steele, as they travel across the United States after Harper has transitioned into a woman at 61.
It was lovely to see such a traditionally masculine man be so supportive of his friend’s transition and be so proactive about helping her feel safe in her new body.
There’s a scene towards the end of the documentary where Harper says the trip made her realise how much Will really loves her.
Harper was once the head writer at Saturday Night Live, and the pair catch up with plenty of SNL alumni along the way including Tina Fey, Tracey Morgan, Will Forte and Kristin Wig.
It’s definitely worth a watch and it’s a great example of how a friendship can adapt and evolve over time.
I loved, loved, loved this piece in The Cut about people who have given up their ‘dream job’ for a job that pays well but doesn’t define them. Is the era of the 'dumb job’ upon us?
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s new Netflix rom-com series is one of the best TV shows of 2024. I sent my paid subscribers my full review on Thursday night.
And if you’re looking for a true crime fix this weekend, check out At Witt’s End on Disney+. It covers the mysterious disappearance and murder of 19-year-old Melissa “Missy” Witt. Missy is believed to have disappeared from a bowling alley carpark in 1994.
Missing Niamh is the latest podcast from the team behind Casefile. Hosted by Casefile’s anonymous host, the podcast is covering the disappearance of 18-year-old Niamh Maye in 2002. After she finished high school, Niamh decided to take a gap year and pick fruit in Batlow in the South West Slopes region of NSW. At Easter, she planned to meet her older sister Funella in Sydney, so they could travel back to their hometown of Armidale together. But Niamh didn’t turn up. She’s now been missing for 22 years and would have been turning 41 this year.
