#67 What I've been watching and buying this week.
A new Netflix documentary, a British thriller and a candle subscription!
In 1974, Cathy Terkanian gave birth to a daughter who she named Alexis. She was only 16 at the time and when Alexis was nine months old, her mother convinced her to give the baby up for adoption.
It was a closed adoption, so Cathy had no idea what had become of Alexis until April 2010, when she received a letter from the adoption agency informing her that Alexis, who was now named Aundria, had been missing for 21 years. They wanted a sample of Cathy’s DNA so they could test it against the DNA of a body that had been found.
The DNA was not a match. But that test was just the beginning of Cathy’s long fight to find out what happened to her baby. Cathy’s story is the topic of the new Netflix two-part documentary, Into The Fire: The Lost Daughter, which is one of the best true crime documentaries I’ve seen in recent years.
It’s an unbelievably sad story, with plenty of twists, but Cathy’s sheer determination to find justice for her daughter is incredible to watch. She reminded me of Frances McDormand’s brilliant character in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
I’m loving the new Britbox four-part series, The Jetty. It stars Jenna Coleman as Detective Ember Manning, a young mum, who is trying to figure out the connection between a fire at a holiday home, a podcast journalist investigating a missing person's cold case, and an illicit love triangle between a man in his 20s and two underage girls. Episode four comes out next week, so it’s the perfect time to jump in.
It’s my birthday next week so I decided to buy myself a candle subscription from Hunter Candles. It’s $40 a month and every month they’ll send me one of the candles from their range. My first candle arrived this week and it was so nice to open a little present to myself. This month’s scent is Australia (Blue Gum + Lemon Myrtle + Wattle) and it smells like a lovely Spring day.
If you enjoyed reading this newsletter, please hit the lil’ love heart below and share it with your mates. What were you obsessed with this week? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
Within a few minutes of reading this, I'd signed up to the candle subscription 😹 this Substack is dangerous!
Into the Fire was brilliant! More than once I got full body chills. Thanks for the recommendation 😃
