My 2023 began with the sudden realisation that I had to take a big leap of faith to move forward — to jump into the great unknown and hope the universe was there to catch me.
So I quit my job, started this newsletter, and began freelancing. The universe — as it turned out — took awhile to catch me.
In June and July, I experienced a terrible bout of anxiety and panic. I couldn’t eat or sleep or be present in a conversation. My mind was constantly on overdrive, thinking about all the possible things that could go wrong, and frantically trying to find some kind of release valve that would ease the constant feeling of pressure.
Slowly, over the next few months, I began to return to my former self. I started to eat, and to go for walks, and to laugh with my friends again.
Last year taught me that the most valuable thing we have in our lives is hope. We need that unwavering belief that things will work out for the best, and if they don’t, we’ll at least learn something along the way.
