#5 Things I've been obsessed with this week.
An unexpected comedy special, a podcast about a con woman, and a film that will stay with you long after you've watched it.
Hello!
In October 2013, two police officers came across a young girl in Dublin’s city centre. The girl seemed distressed. She was non-verbal but indicated with her fingers that she was 14 years old. For several days, the police worked around the clock to identify the girl and return her to her family. The people of Ireland became invested in her story and prayed for a happy ending.
Then the police released a photo of the girl and a relative came forward.
She wasn’t an endangered teenager after all. She was a 24-year-old Australian woman named Samantha Azzopardi. And that incident in Ireland is just the tip of the iceberg in Azzopardi’s long history of conning innocent strangers.
The new podcast, Finding Samantha, deep dives into her story and attempts to answer the question: why would someone go to such extreme lengths to become somebody else?
